Website of the Day
On Friday 27th February 2004, Radio Worldwide's newest
website made BBC Radio 2's Website of the Day.
Developed by short-term worker Dave Mullen,
essaygenerator.com
doesn't immediately strike you as having anything to do with Christianity.
It is one of the few Christian websites aimed at young people who aren't
looking for Christian material, and reflects Dave's particular brand of humour.
Essaygenerator.com allows the visitor to experiment
with several options, all on the theme of randomness. You can randomly
generate an essay on the topic of your choice; find out if you're a suitable
puppy owner; or check out whether or not you yourself are randomly generated!
Basically it's good clean, if quirky, humour, but with
a serious point to offer - none of us are randomly generated, but made for
a purpose. Visitors to the site are invited to find out more, and the link
provided takes them through to a more overtly Christian website called
'Power to Change'.
'Power to Change' gives a simple, but effective breakdown
of what it is to be a Christian. 'I was aiming to reach an audience that
thinks like me, and this was the Christian site that appealed to me most',
said Dave, when asked why he chose to link to this particular site.
In the early stages Dave put a lot of work into promoting
essaygenerator.com, contacting other websites and message boards, and asking
people to link to it. Within a few weeks it just took off - literally
promoting itself - as people got to know about it and started to tell friends
and create their own links to the site. Essaygenerator.com now has an
average of 25,000 visitors a month, and the statistics show that 10% - 2,500 -
of these go on to the 'Power to Change' website.
Email from a visitor to the site
'Love your site. Hope u will keep the puppy test. I've
linked to you from my humour pg. www.petsplace.co.za/humour.htm I'm also
telling everyone who contacts me wanting to know where to buy a puppy, so
every day I plan to tell a few folk about the puppy test. Tks for what u do
to try to get folk to click thru to an evangelistic site. I heard of u thro
web evangelism bulletin.' Eileen, South Africa
